Catching up with 5Dinners at the Twitter Fiction Festival

The Twitter Fiction Festival is offering literature in sharable bits. In case you missed the first three performances, here’s a synopsis of the story so far and a preview of tonight’s installment, starting at 8 pm EST.

Five Dinners is a play created on Twitter in real time, featuring misfits, misanthropes, and madmen gathered at five iconic dinners to receive a vision of the future from time traveler Future Boy.

The dinner guests are Sir John Falstaff, Amy Winehouse, Diogenes, Space Trash, Anna Karenina, Harold Skimpole, A Vague Sense of Unease, and the Head of John the Baptist. Markus Orlyus and Sasha Viasasha are hosting and The Exterminating Angel is on hand to make sure no one leaves before it’s all over.

The event kicked off Wednesday night and has added a character each evening. Future Boy has been trying to deliver his critical message but language has ended so he speaks in a code that the guests have not been able to crack.

Anna Karenina’s estranged husband, Russian statesman and scholar Alexei Alexandrovich Karenin, realized shortly after arriving that a future without language is a future without literature. As the guests realize that they are literary creations, much of last night’s dinner was spent contemplating the possible termination of their existence and what that means for humanity as well.

Markus Orylus and Sasha Viasasha have been working tirelessly to crack Future Boy’s code, and have finally succeeded. Tonight, the guests will receive the message over a recreation of Babette’s Feast from Danish author Isak Dinesen. With the end looming, and bruised egos all around, is forgiveness finally possible?

Apéritif: Amontillado

Soup: “Potage à la Tortue” (turtle soup);

Drink: 1860 Veuve Clicquot and lemonade

1st course: “Blinis Demidoff au Caviar” (buckwheat cakes with caviar and sour cream);

Salad: Belgian chicory and walnuts in vinaigrette;

Drink: 1845 Clos de Vougeot

2nd course “Caille en Sarcophage avec Sauce Perigourdine” (quail in puff pastry shell with foie gras and truffle sauce)

Drink: Akvavit

Pallette cleanser”Les Fromages” featuring blue cheese, papaya, figs, grapes, pineapple, and pomegranate

Dessert: “Savarin au Rhum avec des Figues et Fruits Glacées” (rum sponge cake with figs and glacéed fruits)
